2012 Literary Picks

Picks for 2012

January 16, 2012

Forthcoming titles by William Boyd, Gillian Tindall, Siri Hustvedt, Lucy Wood, Howard Jacobson and Toni Morrison have all been named as literary highlights to look out for in 2012.

The Telegraph has picked William Boyd’s new thriller, Waiting for Sunrise, as a title to look out for when it is published on the 16 February. It follows Lysander Rief, a young British actor, through wartime Europe. Foyles booksellers have also chosen Waiting for Sunrise in their breakdown of the best new fiction due out in the first half of 2012.

Also chosen by the Telegraph is Gillian Tindall’s Three Houses, Many Lives, which will be published on 7 June and charts four centuries of social change in England, and Howard Jacobson’s Zoo Time, which Bloomsbury will publish in early September. On the non-fiction side, Siri Hustvedt’s Living, Thinking, Looking, out in June, brings together Hustvedt’s essays on experience, emotion and art from 2006 to the present day, in a collection that addresses what it is to be human.

Foyles’ picks also include the collection of short stories from debut author Lucy Wood, who has already been tipped as a distinctive new voice in British fiction. Diving Belles is an atmospheric and spellbinding collection of short stories inspired by Cornish folklore, and is due out on 19th January.

One of the most eagerly anticipated titles of the year is Toni Morrison’s Home, which will be published in May. Home tells the moving story of a Korean War veteran who returns to America and is amongst the titles for 2012 chosen by Foyles and the Guardian.
