NewsTom Sturridge wins Critics' Circle Best Newcomer
Tom Sturridge has been named Most Promising Newcomer at the Critics' Circle Awards in recognition of his performance in Simon Stephens' play Punk Rock, which performed at the Lyric Hammersmith and the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester last year.
At the time, Tom's performance received particularly strong critical praise. The Telegraph's Charles Spencer wrote: "In his stage debut, Tom Sturridge, increasingly distressed, announces himself as a major star in the making as the troubled William" and Michael Coveney in The Independent noted how "Young Sturridge makes an astonishingly assured stage debut." Previous recipients of the award, which can be won for any discipline other than writing, include Andrew Garfield, Eddie Redmayne, Rachel Weiss and Sam Mendes.
Meanwhile Spring Awakening, which starred Iwan Rheon, Harry McEntire and Natasha Barnes was named Best Musical.
The Critics' Circle Awards, which first took place in 1989, are voted for by the members of the society's drama section.
