Alecky's hilarious play is drawn from edited conversations she had with prostitutes at an Eatbourne brothel. Alecky aimed to break down conventional stereotypes of prostitutes as drug addicts or illegal immigrants, smuggled into the country and kept hostage by gangs. All the women in The Girlfriend Experience are middle-aged, self-employed and sassy characters, who offer their clients 'the girlfriend experience' of holding hands and cuddling.

Opening at the Royal Court Theatre and performed using Alecky's 'recorded delivery' technique it received rave reviews and transferred to the Young Vic in 2009.
