After graduating in zoology from Balliol College, Oxford, Smith worked as a science correspondent for the Daily Telegraph, and also worked extensively in television and radio, writing for several natural history programmes. Smith's adventures have taken him all over the world. Past expeditions include exploring the Qanat underground irrigation tunnels in Iran (and discovering a new species of fish there) and flying hot air balloons across the Alps and East Africa. In 2011, at the age of 84, he crossed the Atlantic Ocean on a raft with just three companions.
