Nicola Upson is the author of the acclaimed series of crime novels featuring the playwright and novelist Josephine Tey. The first novel in the series An Expert in Murder (Faber) is set in the world of 1930s theatre. The plot of the second book, Angel with Two Faces, takes place on a country estate in Cornwall.

Two for Sorrow, the third book in the Tey series, will be published by Faber in July 2010.

Nicola has also written two non-fiction works: a full-length critical study of the sculptor, Helaine Blumenfeld (Mythologies, Penguin New York, 1998); and a book on theatre in the 21st century (In Good Company: a Snapshot of Theatre and the Arts, 2005) as well as being a major contributor to the Continuum Encyclopedia of British Literature (Continuum, New York 2003).

After reading English at Downing College, Cambridge, Nicola worked in theatre management for several years, an interest which is reflected in An Expert in Murder. Winning the 2005/6 Escalator Award from Arts Council England allowed Nicola the time to research and write her novel: prior to that she was a freelance journalist, writing for a variety of publications in Britain and America, including four years as crime fiction critic for the New Statesman. She also contributes regularly as an arts reviewer for BBC Radio.

Nicola lives with her partner in Cambridge, and spends much of her time in Cornwall, where the second Josephine Tey novel is set. An Expert in Murder was adapted into a Radio 4 Woman's Hour drama in April 2008.
