Alan Beattie was born in Chester. He attended a local comprehensive school and went on to Balliol College, Oxford, where he left with a degree in History in 1993 followed by an MPhil in Economics from Cambridge in 1996.

He worked for two years as an economist at the Bank of England and then joined the Financial Times in London where he writes about economics, globalisation and development. Alan's first book, False Economy: A Surprising Economic History of the World, is published by Penguin (2009).
