Ghost Riders, his first book, investigates the historical roots of the American nomadic impulse, and seeks out the present-day wanderers who are so much a part of the American mythology. The book received high critical acclaim and won the 2004 Thomas Cook Travel Book Award.

Richard's second book, God's Middle Finger, which tracks Richard's journey into the lawless terrain of the Sierra Madre in Mexico, is published by Little, Brown (2008).
