Brendan Gleeson has received an Emmy for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the HBO mini-series Into the Storm.

On collecting the award for ‘Outstanding Lead Actor in a Mini-series or Movie 2009', Gleeson explained how much he had learned about the former Prime Minister during filming.

"He was one of those great people; you could make 10,000 movies -- they've probably made 10,000 about him -- and still find more... He was a Nobel Prize-winning author, among other things, but it was the liveliness of his mind (that most impressed me)..."

Sir Winston's daughter Mary, Lady Soames; and his grandson Winston S. Churchill; acted as consultants on the mini-series, which follows on from HBO's award-winning first series about Sir Winston.  The Gathering Storm was also written by Hugh Whitemore; starring Albert Finney and Vanessa Redgrave.
