Martyn was born in Salford. He studied at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. He was an actor for 10 years working at The National Theatre, Royal Court Theatre, Bristol Old Vic, Crucible Theatre Sheffield. He played many leading roles in Television. His first job was in the film Absolution starring Richard Burton. Martyn stopped acting after he won the Radio Times Drama Award for his first screenplay A Small Mourning starring Alison Steadman.

Martyn has most recently written the feature film Mrs Lowry and Son, starring Timothy Spall and Vanessa Redgrave, which opens in UK cinemas on Tuesday 27th August.
