Matthew Norman is a political commentator and media diarist for The Independent.

He began his career as a feature writer for the Mail on Sunday before taking over as the Evening Standard's television reviewer but it was his stint on the Guardian Diary that caught the public’s attention. A pull-no-punches political gossip column, it became famous for feuding with such New Labour titans as Peter Mandelson, Alastair Campbell and Cherie Blair. Libel threats abounded.

He is also a respected restaurant critic and was awarded the British Press Awards prize for Food and Drink Writer of the Year for his work in the Sunday Telegraph. He currently reviews restaurants for the Guardian.

Matthew is an avid sports fan and writes a twice-weekly sports column in the Evening Standard, managing at one point to get himself and the entire paper banned for a while by Tottenham Hotspur for remarks about the chairman.

He is currently writing a book on his most-hated moments in sporting history.
