Precious Little Talent

★ Winner of Best Play, London Theatre Festival Awards 2011
Trafalgar Studios, London, 2011 Producer Tantrums Productions Director James Dacre Writer Ella Hickson Starring Anthony Welsh, Ian Gelder & Olivia Halinnan

Precious Little Talent opened at Trafalgar Studios, running from 5th April - 30th April.

Joey is a young graduate with a first class degree and a £20,000 debt and now works in a club. Come Christmas she decides to escape to New York to find comfort with her father. However, just as the world has shunned her, so will he. As both the private and public worlds collapse around her Joey will accidentally fall in love with the idealistic Sam.

Precious Little Talent dovetails together two stories; that of a father struglling not to forget his daughter and his daughter struggling not to be forgotten by the world; and a romance that pitches American optimism against British cynicism.

A shorter version of Precious Little Talent ran to critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Festival in 2009 and enjoyed a sell-out run.

It really is an astonishingly mature, subtle and beguiling piece of work ... It's a play simply about living in the world. Somehow it feels revolutionary

The British Theatre Guide

Precious Little Talent is just sensational ... you'd be forgiven for thinking you were watching something on the International Festival, not the Fringe ... Simply amazing theatre

Pete Shaw Broadway Baby

Hickson can not only handle dialogue and play with structure, but she also has something urgent to say ... Precious Little Talent suggests that Hickson is growing up fast as a writer – and that she really is a little bit special.

Lyn Gardner The Guardian

The richness of Hickson’s writing means that at only an hour, the play feels severely restricted – a rare experience at the festival. You will be left wanting, but for all the right reasons.

Elizabeth Kirkwood The Telegraph

an impressive follow-up to her award-winning 2008 show, Eight ... Sam and Joey too seem like iconic figures for our time

Joyce McMillan The Scotsman

I’d implore you to get a ticket for Precious Little Talent this spring – it’s bound to be a sell-out.

Rosy Banham A Younger Theatre

Within two minutes, it’s obvious that Hickson has a delicious way with words. After 20 minutes, her cool mastery of theatre form is evident ... a text that sparkles with ideas like the night-time New York skyline

Aleks Sierz The Stage

The play is refreshingly, honestly and strongly about now. Ask no more

Libby Purves The Times

Playwright Ella Hickson has been quietly making a name for herself, and this, her second play ... is a good indicator of her talent ... This is original writing

Michael Coveney The Independent

In Precious Little Talent [Hickson] confirms that she's an accomplished writer, whose signature seems to be an eloquent simplicity ... The writing feels fresh and is beautifully observed: funny, original, touching and authentic
