The Guardian's Best Comedy Picks of 2011

Spy

January 04, 2012

Spy, This is Jinsy, Psychoville, Trollied and Twenty Twelve have all been included in The Guardian's round-up of best television comedy for 2011.

Spy, created and written by Simeon Goulden and directed by Ben Taylor launched on Sky 1 last Autumn. The Guardian describes it as a "brilliantly written show" which "... makes stunning use of physical comedy and the gags come thick and fast". Starring Darren Boyd, the comedy centres on a luckless single father who is recruited accidentally into M15. A second series of Spy has been commissioned and will again be produced by Hat Trick productions.

Psychoville directed by Matt Lipsey is Guardian writer Phelim O'Neill's pick of the year which he describes as "stuff of hilarious nightmares". Psychoville picked up the Best Comedy Drama Award at the 2011 British Comedy Awards. The strange world has captured imaginations and stars Dawn French and Reece Sheersmith as two of the weird strangers brought together by strange coincidence. "Comedy thoroughbred" This is Jinsy, also directed by Matt Lipsey, made The Guardian's list.

Trollied, written by Julie Rutterford and starring Nick Blood is described as a 'comedy thoroughbred'.  The series debuted as the most successful multi-channel comedy ever and has since been commissioned for Seasons 2, 3 and a Christmas special.

Twenty Twelve, created written and directed by John Morton, premiered on BBC4 in March. Garnering critical acclaim, with The Guardian calling it "a breath of fresh air", it went on to win Best Sitcom at the 2011 Comedy Awards. Following the hapless Olympics Deliverance Committee as they attempt to prepare for the London Olympic Games, the series will return for a second series in 2012 with Hugh Bonneville, Olivia Colman, Karl Theobald and Jessica Hynes reprising their roles.
