A graduate of Yale University and a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, Karl Marlantes served as a Marine in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star, two Navy Commendation medals for valor, two Purple Hearts, and ten air medals.
His debut novel, Matterhorn was on the New York Times hardcover bestseller list for 17 weeks. It won the Flahery-Dunnan First Novel Prize, the James Webb Award for distinguished fiction, and the William E. Colby Award.
He and his wife Anne live on a small lake in western Washington State.
