Maggie Gee has written eleven acclaimed novels, including My Cleaner, The White Family, shortlisted for the Orange Prize and the International Impac Prize, and The Ice People (revised edition 2008, Telegram Books), and one collection of short stories, The Blue.
She is Vice-President of the UK's Royal Society of Literature and was its first female Chair of Council, 2004-2008. Her books have been translated into 13 languages including Chinese. and she is Visiting Professor of Creative Writing at Sheffield Hallam University. She takes on big themes including war and reconciliation, the relationship of the human species to other species, global warming and racism, but her books are frequently funny as well as serious.
Her novel, My Driver, published spring 2009, was called ‘worldly, witty, enjoyable, impressive' by Doris Lessing. My Animal Life, Maggie Gee's memoir, was published in March.
