June 24, 2010

Mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington was among those honoured in the Queen's Birthday Honours list. Sir Chris was awarded the Royal Victorian Order (RVO) as a personal gift from the Queen, bestowed independently of 10 Downing Street.

The RVO is a dynastic order of knighthood and a house order of chivalry recognising distinguished personal service to the order's Sovereign, the reigning monarch of the Commonwealth realms, any members of her family, or any of her viceroys.

Sir Chris scaled Everest in 1985 at the age of 50 and has made many first ascents in the Alps and the greater ranges of the world.

In 2009 he was made deputy patron of the Outward Bound Trust
