Tom Rob Smith's Russian thriller, Child 44, and Daniel Clay's captivating and tragic novel Broken, have both been long listed for the Desmond Elliott prize for first time novelists, announced on 24 April 2008.

The prize, which celebrates new, sparkling writing, is awarded biennially in memory of Desmond Elliott, the renowned publisher and literary agent. The winner will be announced in London on 26 June 2008.
