Cormac McCarthy’s 2006 play
The Sunset Limited has been adapted as a TV movie by HBO. The film stars Samuel L. Jackson as ex-con and ex-addict ‘Black’ who stops professor ‘White’, played by Tommy Lee Jones, from jumping in front of train. What follows is a powerful and thought-provoking confrontation between these two very different men about the meaning of life.
This is the second time that Tommy Lee Jones plays one of Cormac McCarthy’s characters. He played the part of Ed Tom Bell in the Cohen brothers’ Oscar-winning adaptation of
No Country for Old Men (2007). This time, Jones is also producing and directing, and his adaptation has been hailed as ‘an outright masterpiece’ (
Entertainment Weekly) and ‘gripping, disturbing and, at times, mordantly funny’ (
ABC News).
The movie was released in the US on February 12, 2011 and rights have been sold in over 50 territories.
