Aug 10, 2017

Fiona Neill’s The Betrayals and Rachel RhysA Dangerous Crossing have been chosen for the Richard and Judy Book Club Autumn Selection.

The Betrayals (Penguin, 2017) is an exploration of the nature of memory and desire, following the consequences on two families of an affair between Rosie Rankin’s husband and her best friend. Daughter Daisy's fragile hold on reality begins to unravel when a letter arrives that opens up all the old wounds. Teenage son Max blames himself for everything which happened that long hot summer. And brittle ex-husband Nick has his own version of events. Sometimes there are four sides to every story, and nobody knows which one to believe.

A Dangerous Crossing (Transworld, 2017) is the story of Lily Shepherd, who boards an ocean liner for Australia on her way to a new life, leaving behind her shadowy past. The passage proves magical, with exotic locations along the way, and featuring people outside of her social sphere, including a man who she couldn’t possibly have a future with outside the cocoon of the ship. But by the time the ship docks, two of Lily’s fellow passengers are dead, war has been declared and Lily's life will be irrevocably changed.

In the Summer Selection, Clare Mackintosh won the Reader’s Vote with I See You (Little, Brown) which has featured in The Sunday Times’s Top 10 for fourteen weeks since publication in April. Clare's debut novel, I Let You Go, won the same accolade in 2015. On winning, she commented “this endorsement from readers is the icing on a truly wonderful cake. I’m so grateful to W H Smith, and of course to Richard & Judy, for putting I See You into the hands of so many readers.”
