August 11, 2010
Eva Ibbotson's
The Ogre of Oglefort (Macmillan 2010) has been longlisted for the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize.
This fantastical comic adventure sees a hag, a troll, a wizard and a orphan boy unite in a quest to rescue a princess and face a terrifying ogre.
Introducing the longlist, Julia Eccleshare of the
Guardian said: "Facing up to the terrifying flesh-eating Ogre is quite an ordeal; trying to rescue the princess as well seems impossible. But nothing, in this deliciously entertaining and frothy novel, goes quite according to plan. It's full of surprises, and all the capers unfold elegantly, leading to a delightful conclusion."
Previous winners of the prize include Philip Pullman, Ted Hughes and Anne Fine. The winner will be announced in September 2010.
