The American tops Labor Day weekend box office in the US

Rowan Joffe's feature film The American pulled ahead of its nearest rivals to become the No. 1 film in America over the Labor Day weekend. The Focus Features film earned $12.9 million over the weekend, and has so far earned $16million since its release on Wednesday 1st September 2010.

The film, which stars George Clooney as Jack and Thekla Reuten as Mathilde, follows an assassin who is hiding out in Italy between assignments. Savoring the peaceful countryside of Abruzzo, Jack accepts the friendship of local priest, Father Benedetto, and pursues the beautiful Clara.  Jack and Clara's time together evolves into a romance, one seemingly free of danger. However, by stepping out of the shadows, Jack is putting himself, and his new love, in danger.
