Payback released in cinemas in Canada

Mar 21, 2012

Margaret Atwood’s bestselling book Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth has been adapted for screen. The documentary film by the same title has been released in Toronto cinemas this week. It was written and directed by Jennifer Baichwal and features commentary from the thinker and bestselling author Raj Patel. An official selection in the World Documentary category at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, the film explores the concept of debt in modern society.

The origins of the book go back to the prestigious Massey lecture series on the subject of debt which Margaret Atwood delivered in 2008. Just as Wall Street was heading for disaster, both the lectures and subsequent book explored the idea of debt in a very human context, looking at the religious, literary and social impact of repayment and indebtedness.

Margaret Atwood is an internationally renowned novelist, poet, critic and activist, with work published in over thirty languages. Her novel The Blind Assassin, won the Booker Prize in 2000 and she has been the recipient of many awards over a career spanning more than forty years.

Raj Patel is an award winning writer, activist and academic, who has campaigned against former employers the World Bank and WTO. His most recent book The Value of Nothing is a New York Times bestseller.
