Rachel Lloyd is the founder and Executive Director of GEMS -
Girls Educational and Mentoring Services in Harlem - one of the most
ground-breaking non-profit organizations in the US that is helping young
women escape the life that Rachel herself did.
Rachel has been featured The New York Times as a Public
Lives profile, The New York Sun, The New York Daily News,
Essence, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, The
Village Voice, The Daily Telegraph (UK), and The
Washington Times among other places. In 2003, Ms. Magazine
honored her as ‘One of 50 Women Who Change the World' and she was
featured in the New York Daily News in 2004 as ‘One of 100
Women Who Shape Our City'. Rachel has also appeared on many TV and radio
shows including Oprah and NPR.
A two hour documentary film entitled Very Young Girls was
made by filmmaker David Schisgall (who previously collaborated
with Erroll Morris), starring Rachel and featuring her work with GEMS.
