Tim Fountain was born in Dewbury, West Yorkshire and grew up in a pub. He studied drama at Hull university where he wrote his first play Harold's Day, which was presented at the National Student Drama Festival and subsequently moved to the Edinburgh Festival and Battersea Arts Centre.
After stints at the Birmingham Rep and on the Royal Court Young Writers' Programme, his next play Last Bus to Bradford won the prestigious Pink Paper play award and was produced at the Drill Hall.
From 1997 to 2001, Tim was literary manager at the Bush, working with Mike Bradwell and giving debuts to many writers who have gone on to become established and highly regarded playwrights.
As well as writing a number of critically acclaimed plays, often stage biographies of the famous (or infamous), Tim is author of Rude Britannia (Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2008), a humorous exploration of the changing attitudes to sex in Britain.
Tim has worked as a director on
a number of projects including Puppetry of the Penis, which toured the UK; Harold's Day; These Childish Things; Antigone; One In A Blue Moon; Last Bus From Bradford and Arriverderci Barnsley. He has taught at the University of Strathclyde, the Arvon Foundation and
at RADA and written for magazines including The New Statesman and Attitude.
