Time Out on Catholics by Richard Alwyn

By Chris Waywell

'The world is a fallen place, and there is a great deal of wickedness around, and there's nothing that can be done by any one human being to take that away.' This is the rather bleak assessment of life from on e of the trainee priests in this, the first of a three-part series by Richard Alwyn looking at aspects of contemporary Catholicism. He seems pretty cheerful about it, though, and this sums up this behind-the-scenes picture of Chelsea seminary Allen Hall: an atmosphere of dusty aspidistrary irrelevance populated by young men looking for a personal understanding of things. It's hard to feel much sympathy or empathy for them, and though this doc is as thorough and as insightful as it can be, it fails to make their faith or quest any easier to relate to.
