World Book Night 2012 longlist announced
September 13, 2011
The
World Book Night 2012 committee, for which
Tracy Chevalier is chair, has announced the longlist of the 100 titles which are in the running to be selected for next year’s giveaway. From 25 June to 31 August 2011 readers were asked to nominate their favourite 10 books. Over 6,000 people nominated more than 8,000 titles and the
top 100 now make up the longlist from which the WBN committee will select 25 titles which members of the public can apply to give away. The 25 titles will be announced during the Frankfurt Book Fair in October 2011.
The longlist is made up of an array classic novels and popular modern titles, including seven Curtis Brown titles.
Daphne du Maurier’s timeless
Rebecca and
Joseph Heller’s
Catch 22, both frequently heralded as two of the greatest literary works of the twentieth century, are featured, alongside two titles by
Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale and
Alias Grace.
Susanna Clarke’s
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is also on the list. Two titles that were included in last year’s giveaway are featured again in this year’s longlist:
Cloud Atlas by
David Mitchell and
One Day by
David Nicholls.
World Book Night will be held on 23 April 2012.
