Eighteen-year-old Nicole Palmer has been waiting years for a chance to study a collection of supernatural art, housed in a local Cornish manor. Encoded in its symbols and ancient paint is the last message from her mother on how to stay safe from The Wake—a shadowy organization which governs all mythological creatures, or ‘Varians’. The Wake are ruled by Empyreals, powerful hunters with the ability to track and kill dangerous Varians – abilities which Nicole shares, making her invaluable to The Wake. But Nicole and her family have been in hiding for years; if her Empyreal powers were ever triggered, the Wake would find her, use her, or kill her for resisting.

Like they did her mother.

When Nicole finally secures an internship to study the works, she finds her greatest enemy—one of The Wake’s Empyreals—is the new owner of the art. He’s handsome, perceptive, and sworn to bring in any rogue Empyreals he comes across. Kyan McCarter was stationed at the manor to hunt a deadly Varian, and he doesn’t expect interference from anyone, certainly not a mysterious and strident girl he’s sure isn’t human. But when they discover a painting they both need has been stolen by the creature Kyan is hunting, Nicole and Kyan are forced to work together to find it.

As the creature threatens to expose Nicole’s power, her tenuous alliance with Kyan threatens her heart. And Kyan finds Nicole stirring memories and feelings The Wake have trained him to forget. If Kyan finds out what she is, he’ll hunt her next—or risk execution. No one disobeys The Wake and survives. Especially not when the art they’re seeking holds the key to a conspiracy that could get them both killed, and change the lives of creatures, and humans, forever.
