British author Ray Coryton Hutchinson was born in North London and earned his degree from Oriel College, Oxford before forging a career in the advertising industry. He began writing while still an ad man, but his early novels were so successful that he gave up his advertising job in 1935 to become a full-time writer. His third novel, The Unforgotten Prisoner sold 150,000 copies in its first month of publication and he continued to write until the Second World War.

He fought for the Army during the War and still wrote during this period. He wrote many more successful novels in his lifetime and died before completing the last chapter of his novel Rising. The book was published posthumously and nominated for a Booker Prize.
