Written by Wole Soyinka, who in 1986 won the Nobel Prize for Literature, the play is set in 1940s Nigeria and stars Nonzo Anozie as Elesin, the King's chief horseman.

The King has died and tribal tradition demands that Elesin commits suicide in order to accompany him on his way to the afterlife. British colonial powers stage a humanitarian intervention to prevent his suicide, with disastrous consequences that bring conflict to the entire Yoruba community.

It says much for Rufus Norris's liberating production that thethemes emerge with tumultuous force..........Norris's production moves assuredly from the teeming world of a raffia-filled market to the play's elemental conclusion. Michael Billington
