Bitter, Sugar Money, The Zoo and The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock longlisted for HWA awards

Four Curtis Brown authors have made the longlists for the HWA Crown Awards. The awards honour the best of historical writing annually and are open to authors of any nationality with a book first published in the UK in English.

Both The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar and Bitter by Francesca Jakobi have been longlist for the HWA Debut Crown. The judges called The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock a “genuinely fresh take on eighteenth-century London” and Bitter a “psychologically penetrating portrait of a mother struggling to come to terms with her past.”

The Zoo by Christopher Wilson and Sugar Money by Jane Harris made the longlist for HWA Sharpe Books Gold Crown, the award given to the best historical novel. Judges praised Sugar Money as “a novel with fantastic energy and verve… bold and ambitious” and called The Zoo “bittersweet, vital and commendably different.”
