John le Carré awarded Olof Palme Prize 2019

John le Carré has been named the latest recipient of The Olof Palme Prize 2019. The award is given for “outstanding achievement” and the prize organizers have praised the author for “his engaging and humanistic opinion-making in the literary form regarding the freedom of the individual and the fundamental issues of mankind”.

Over his career, John le Carré has consistently engaged with the most urgent questions of our time. Le Carré’s work urges us to examine the machinations of governments and global corporations and how the actions of these organisations have borne down on the freedom of the individual. In the spirit of Olof Palme, John le Carré has made a major and profoundly necessary contribution to the international fight for freedom, democracy and social justice.

In addition to a diploma, the winner receives a prize sum of $100,000. John le Carré will be donating the entirety to the charity Médecins Sans Frontières.

The awards ceremony will take place on January 30th in Grünewaldsalen in the Concert Hall in Stockholm.
