Mark O’Connell wins Wellcome Book Prize for To Be a Machine

Mark O’Connell has won the Wellcome Book Prize for To Be a Machine. The book was chosen from a shortlist of six works published last year with themes relating to aspect of medicine, health or illness, and O’Connell was awarded £30,000 as the winner. Edmund de Waal, Chair of Judges, called To Be a Machine, “a passionate, entertaining and cogent examination of those who would choose to live forever. Mark O’Connell brilliantly examines issues of technology and singularity. In doing so he brings into focus timely issues about mortality, what it might mean to be a machine and what it truly means to be human.”

To Be a Machine has previously been shortlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize and the Royal Society Science Book Prize.
